A baptism candle is traditionally used in the Christian sacrament of baptism as a symbol of the new life that the person being baptised is entering into through their faith in Jesus Christ. The candle is usually lit from the Paschal candle, which represents the light of Christ that illuminates the darkness of sin and death.
The person being baptised may hold the baptism candle during the ceremony to symbolise the light of Christ that is now within them. Additionally, during the ceremony, a small amount of oil is often placed on the person's forehead which is known as chrism, this serves as a reminder of the anointing of the Holy Spirit and the presence of the Lord in their life.
